My theory about Star Wars Episode VIII's possible twist

So new year, new post.

I was going to write about anime releases for this season but after glancing through the releases page, I was left stumped. Are there any shows that I can be sure will be good without risking self-lobotomization (like Shinmai Maou did to me in the first episode alone)?

Instead I will talk about a theory of mine for the next Star Wars sequel, and not the upcoming one titled Rogue One. After watching the new flick and thinking about it, I have this suspicion that the next movie might play out like Empire Strikes Back so I began thinking of possible twists while watching a playthough of the two Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) games.

I wound up thinking about this theory as a result.

We all know of Rey and how she is the Jedi of the new films. Her abnormally quick mastery of the Force in the film's climax was quite a surprise to me when I first saw the film as to my knowledge, use of the Force to that level requires training like Luke did between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. After trekking through the bog that is the Internet, I came across theories for her skill with the Force. After looking through them, I came up with one while borrowing from others who I am unable to remember even after five cold showers. Here lies the twist I came up with:

Rey is both Luke's daughter and the actual traitor who destroyed Luke's fledgling Jedi Order. Having been trained from young as a Padawan, she along with Kylo Ren were seduced to the Dark Side separately by Snoke. Snoke only trained Rey extensively since she was Luke's child with his potential and eventually, orders her to kill all the apprentices before any of them could master the Force. While she successfully defeats the students of the fledgling Order using her Dark Side Force abilities, Luke effortlessly defeats her. Kylo however is lost to the Dark Side since Snoke lost his strong apprentice and thus, retains Kylo as his new but weaker apprentice. Out of his remaining love for his child and shame for failing her along with Kylo, Luke erases Rey's memories and abandons her on Jakku to protect her and to forget his greatest failure, leaving Rey unaware of her true heritage and dark secret. Her mother is probably deceased or alive but hiding like Luke.

As the previous parts of the post may indicate, I took this theory primarily from the big twist of Knights of the Old Republic 1 which is the player character who happens to be a Force prodigy that learns the Force within weeks turns out to be an amnesiac Darth Revan, the Dark Lord of the Sith before Darth Malak's betrayal that only mortally wounded the former Dark Lord, allowing the Jedi Order at the time to erase his identity and program a new one that was loyal to the Republic while retaining his traits prior to his fall to the Dark Side.

Above is a picture of Darth Revan (better ones are available all over the Internet). I may be remembering this wrong but from the movie, it was established that Luke's fledgling Jedi Order was destroyed due to the actions of one who turned on them all. The movie allows the viewer to make the assumption that it was Kylo Ren who did so and his betrayal along with regret for such a failure is the reason for Luke's disappearance in the film. I thought so as well but then, the movie showcases Kylo Ren after he removes his mask. As a Dark Side Force user, he is rather pathetic as he seems only capable of augmenting himself with the Force, mind-probing non-Force users, telekinesis augmented by his bloodline links and basic blaster deflection with a lightsaber. Even with his wound, it would be difficult for a non-Force user to even hurt a properly trained Force user which indicates Kylo's skill when Finn, a normal trained soldier, is able to wound him. To be fair, Kylo is relatively untrained, going by Snoke's remark near the end of the film and he may possibly improve by the time the sequel rolls in.

So this made me wonder; how did someone like Kylo manage to destroy a Jedi Order even if it was a fledgling organisation? My answer: he did not. Someone else did. Someone who had superior mastery over the Force. Someone who managed to beat Kylo after tuning into the Force... Hi, Rey!

My opinion is based on the fact that the film does not address who actually destroyed the Jedi Order precisely and if I am proven wrong then there may not be a huge twist at all. The basic Rey is Luke or Obi-Wan's child revelation would probably suffice. I like to imagine these things though. Like KOTOR 1's big twist, it could apply here with Rey, daughter of Luke, being seduced by the Dark Side of the Force and ends up being trained by Snoke reaching a level superior to the other Jedi-in training. Kylo was the other person Snoke was luring to the Dark Side as a contingency should Rey fail. Alternatively, Rey is the traitor but is not Luke's child but someone else's child from a powerful bloodline. This would definitely explain her unexpected mastery of the Force as her repressed memories are slowly being unearthed when she is exposed to the Force and her connection would probably still be there, allowing her to use the Force like she does in the film.

If this twist is pulled off with enough tweaks and creativity in the writing, this could be both a boon and a flaw to the next movie depending on the impact. The flaw is that the twist would appear to be uninspired and would make it seem like lazy writing on part of the writers. On the other hand, the twist, if well-executed, would change the direction of the final movie as Rey would have to understand how to balance the Light and Dark side as her current and former selves clash due to incompatible motives and emotions, forcing her to understand both sides and achieving a balance between the two seemingly incompatible sides of her.

I admit that I do underestimate Kylo and what I say here about a trained dark apprentice could apply to Kylo as well though his performance against Chewbacca, Finn and Rey does not leave a good impressions of his skills at his current level. I am more than willing to admit that I am wrong about my theory if it turns out differently than what I say here. It would be pretty hilarious though if the sequel to The Force Awakens acts more like KOTOR 2 and actively deconstructs the Star Wars universe though. I would enjoy that but I suspect the same individuals who, for some reason I cannot fathom, hate KOTOR 2 with bile, would probably be foaming in the mouth should the sequel act like this.

END OF SPOILER

Now that the main point of the post is over, I will be saying that I may be more sporadic with releasing new posts for my online journal. I am running out of ideas and releases for games are rather far off. So, I may disappear for a while without warning (not that anyone cares about another person's online journal). Until then, I bid the reader a good day (or night).

P.S: Anyone else plays the Metro series? I have started and it is going pretty well so far.

EDIT (2021): BOY WAS I WRONG! THIS TRILOGY IS GOD-AWFUL!
